The Tendency of Multilingual Children to Music / Çokdilli Çocukların Müziğe Yatkınlıkları

⭐️ A study conducted in 2016 shows that babies growing up in a multilingual environment may be more sensitive to musical sounds than babies growing up in monolingual environments. Compared to monolingual babies, children who grew up bilingual or multilingual were more sensitive to pitch differences in language. The researchers wondered whether this sensitivity was limited to speech and also tested the music sensitivity of monolingual and multilingual infants. The results showed that infants who grew up in multilingual environments could distinguish two violin tones better than their monolingual peers. It is believed that these babies are able to translate … Continue reading The Tendency of Multilingual Children to Music / Çokdilli Çocukların Müziğe Yatkınlıkları

Music and Multilingualism / Müzik ve Çokdillilik

⭐️ In previous posts I have spoken about the effects of singing on language development. It is possible to talk about the positive effects of music on the learning of both the first and second (and third, fourth, etc.) language. So what is the situation for bilingual (or multilingual) children? There are different types of bilingualism and different ways of learning. For example, when children learn two languages simultaneously from birth, we call this simultaneous bilingualism. These children have two “first” languages, so to speak. If they start with one language first and then later with the other, we call … Continue reading Music and Multilingualism / Müzik ve Çokdillilik

Instrument Reviews / Enstrüman Değerlendirmeleri

⭐️ Reviews of musical instruments for children. They are all based on my own observations and experiences over the years. Piano: I think it is one of the ideal instruments for music theory lessons. There is no tuning problem (as long as the instrument is periodically tuned). Disadvantage: It is not very affordable and can be a space problem. Solution: It can be a space problem: some electric pianos are of very good quality, are more affordable and take up less space. Guitar: It is easier to buy, keep and return if the child does not like it compared to … Continue reading Instrument Reviews / Enstrüman Değerlendirmeleri

Which Music Instrument?/ Hangi Müzik Enstrümanı?

⭐️ What is the right instrument to introduce children to music? This is one of the most frequent questions I encounter as a music teacher. There is no single correct answer because every child is a different world and every family is a different universe. But I can try to give some ideas by highlighting some points myself. First of all, learning and making music by children is not the same as learning to play an instrument. There are different musical activities that can be done with children from a very young age: Singing, Dancing, Using pots, pans and tables … Continue reading Which Music Instrument?/ Hangi Müzik Enstrümanı?

Singing and Language Development / Şarkı Söylemek ve Dil Gelişimi

⭐️ The article in the Guardian talks about the relationship between singing in young children and their language development. Sally Goddard Blythe, the author of The Genius of Natural Childhood, says that the lullabies, songs and rhymes of each culture reflect the unique melody of the language so that the music prepares the child for the language. One of the most striking pieces of information in the article, which I fully agree with, is that children’s reaction to live music is different than their reaction to recorded music. In other words, playing music from a computer, phone or CD does … Continue reading Singing and Language Development / Şarkı Söylemek ve Dil Gelişimi

Music and Language Learning Processes / Müzik ve Dil Öğrenme Süreçleri

⭐️ Music educator Gordon says that the process that develops as listening, understanding, speaking, reading/writing and learning grammar rules in the language learning process works similarly in music. We don’t speak the first few years of our lives right away. First, we listen, then we make sounds, then we gradually transform these sounds into words and sentences. Then, when we go to school, where we learn to read and write these sounds. We can consider music education in this order. When learning a language, reading-writing is almost the last part of the whole process. But when we speak of music … Continue reading Music and Language Learning Processes / Müzik ve Dil Öğrenme Süreçleri

Music and Language Relationship / Müzik ve Dil İlişkisi

⭐️ When I learned English as my first foreign language, I made great use of music. As a result my interest in the relationship between music and language grew and I wrote my master’s and doctoral theses on this subject. So what is the relationship between music and language? Both have rhythm and melody. Both have connections to cultures. Both have their own rules. Babies both develop at the same time. According to Nettl, every culture in the world has language and music (or a similar structure). The anthropologist Livingstone thinks that perhaps the first people sang before they began … Continue reading Music and Language Relationship / Müzik ve Dil İlişkisi

How should children start making music? / Çocuklar müziğe nasıl başlamalı?

⭐️ Since I know myself, I have been interested in music. I have over 10 years of teaching experience. Three years ago I finished my doctoral thesis about music education and multilingualism at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. I would like to pass on what I have learned from both my academic research and my pedagogical experience in order to raise awareness, especially for early childhood music education and language acquisition. If you are ready, we will start today with the first topic 🙂 The most common question I am asked by parents or caregivers is how … Continue reading How should children start making music? / Çocuklar müziğe nasıl başlamalı?
